JIJONA
(XIXONA -
VALENCIAN)
Jijona is a very old town with
lovely quiet narrow streets situated on the slopes of Pena
Migjorn (also known as Penya Roja). On top of the hill next to
it you will find the ruins of the old city castle, with an
impressive view of the landscape including the mountains of
Font Roja national park, where there are beehives that were
originally used by the Moors to collect honey to make Turron.
Jijona is famous all over Spain for being the birthplace of
Turron. A Mecca for the sweet toothed. Turron is a Spanish
sweet made with almonds, honey, sugar and eggs and eaten
during December. As you wander through the streets there are
numerous roadside stalls selling honey. On the outskirts of
the town you will see the Museo del Turron where you can see
how the Turron is produced.
